What is The Widowed Sing?
The Widowed Sing is a pop-up choir workshop day for men and women who have been widowed. It is a day for friendship, solidarity and fun. This is about being among your tribe, getting to know other widowed people and enjoying the experience of group singing.
You don’t have to be able to sing!
This is the third year we’ve run this event, and over that time we’ve had well over 100 widows and widowers join us. Some have been in choirs before, many haven’t. We get many people coming who have never sung in a group before. The question we get asked most is “I really can’t sing. Are you sure this is for me?” And our answer is 100% yes!
What happens on the day?
We will meet at 9am at St Paul’s Church, 10 minutes walk from Cambridge station. We ask you to bring a photo of your loved one and we start the day by lighting a candle and remembering who we have lost.
We then start the fun with some vocal warm-ups led by our wonderful choir leader, Helen Robbins, who will put everyone at ease. We will enjoy a day learning to sing three popular and meaningful songs. There will be plenty of breaks, with time to chat and make new friends.
We provide easy-to-follow lyrics sheets which you will use throughout the day and for the performance. For those who read music or who find it helpful, the sheet music will also be available.
At 5pm, we will perform our songs to a small invited audience of our friends and family. This will also be live streamed. We will then celebrate with a well-deserved glass of wine alongside our friends and family.
What does it cost?
We ask for a contribution of £50 to cover tuition, refreshments during the day and a glass of wine after the performance. Lunch is not included, so we ask you to bring your own.
Any profits from this event go to Arthur Rank Hospice Charity, our local hospice. We will also collect donations on the day.
Cambridge Widows is committed to making our events accessible to all, so a small number of concession and free places can be made available. Please don’t let money be the reason you don’t come along. Get in touch to ask.

No! The day is about coming together as a widowed community, building friendships and doing something joyful. It’s not a professional choir and everyone is welcome. We will be in the incredibly capable hands of our choir leader Helen Robbins who will teach us everything we need. The day is open to complete beginners as well as anyone who has sung before, be that in a choir or just in the shower. We will use lyrics sheets throughout the day and performance.
Many of those who have attended our other choir days have told us that they were nervous and couldn’t sing. And yet every single one of them found the day joyful and empowering. This is an amazing opportunity to learn to sing alongside others who are sharing the same loss as you, and to do something for yourself.

There is a lot of evidence that singing is a therapeutic practice that can profoundly and positively impact our well-being. When we sing, our bodies respond by stabilising and recalibrating our nervous systems, bringing us back to a place of balance and calmness. Research has shown that singing helps regulate our emotions, releasing endorphins and helping to manage stress and anxiety.
And research also shows that singing in a group improves mental health and wellbeing. Synchronised singing creates bonds between people, and this is especially the case for those who already share such a profound loss as those who are widowed. In our experience, those singing in our widowed choirs feel a real sense of togetherness and find it more emotional and more uplifting than they expected.
The benefits of singing alongside others are physiological as well as emotional. When people sing together, they naturally synchronise their breathing patterns and their heartbeats, creating a rhythm that extends beyond the music. This synchronisation doesn't just foster a sense of unity; research shows that it also leads to neural activity being synchronised among participants. This reinforces feelings of connection and increases the therapeutic impact, promoting both mental and physical well-being.
