Cambridge Widows Plus
Cambridge Widows Plus is a new group for older widows
We are pleased to be able to offer a new group that aims to give friendship and support to older women, who are dealing with the challenges of learning to live alone in retirement and in advancing age.
Judy F, Bridget and Alison have been meeting regularly in a local group for widows, providing mutual support and holding regular activities. They are keen to extend this friendship to other older widows who might be finding life lonely, or who just want to have a chat with those who ‘get it’. Building on the success of Cambridge Widows, they are creating Cambridge Widows “Plus” , for older widows.
Cambridge Widows Plus intends to meet once a month on Monday afternoons for a cup of tea and a chat. At these meetings, they will discuss ideas of other meet-ups throughout the month, such as a monthly film outing or a walk. It will be up to those who are there to work out what kind of things they want to do.
The monthly Cambridge Widows Plus gatherings will be posted on the Cambridge Widows Events Calendar here.

JUDY FINDLAY
“My husband had been ill with Parkinson’s for many years. For the last two years he was in a care home that I visited every day. In some senses his death was not a shock but it left an enormous hole in my life and a need to adapt to living on my own. I was invited to join a Widows group who have been a great support to me and a source of much fun. The three of us would like set up this new widows group so others can benefit from the same support, fun and friendship.”
BRIDGET SOMEKH
“My husband died six years ago. He was nearly four years younger than me, so my family jokingly called him my toy boy. When I was 70 I could see that he felt I needed looking after, and neither of us was expecting it to be the other way around. He was ill for six months deteriorating very rapidly. It was very scary and when the end came, I found being widowed a terrific shock. Absolutely everything in my life changed. What really helped was my friendships with other widows which is why I want to help to set up Widows Plus for older women like me as an extension of the very successful Cambridge Widows group.”
ALISON BLAIR-UNDERWOOD
“I was widowed nearly 21 years ago. My husband died very unexpectedly and it was a traumatic time for my (young) daughter and for me. I learnt to ‘fill the gap’ in the years that followed but have been very grateful to have been part of an older Widows group for some years. It is very supportive and a source of diverse activity and fun. I wish that there had been a similar group when I was newly widowed.”
